Being on Academic Probation or otherwise out of Good Academic Standing is concerning. We know students are resilient and can bounce back from academic setbacks by actively addressing roadblocks and using the resources available.
In fact, we think 49er Rebound students are the experts on resilience, so we asked them what advice or suggestions they would give another UNC Charlotte student who just found out they were on Academic Probation.

“Do not let it discourage you, keep your eyes on the prize. You still have a chance to be the student you wanted to be.” “Be honest with the people who are here to help you with it. Work hard and do your best to make a change.” “Talk to your peers and always ask for help! Always manage your time, and turn all your assignments in on time. Do not wait until the last minute.” “Do not freak out, it isn’t the end of the world. Look at it as a way to reinvent yourself as a student.” “Do what you need to do in order to get off of academic probation and don’t let one bad semester define your time in college.” “Don’t panic, participate in 49er Rebound, and trust the process.” “Go to class no matter what! I keep telling myself that though, but I know it helps if someone reminds you or helps you go to class.” “I would tell them that the feeling of getting that letter makes you feel like you have seriously messed up in your academic work. But I would also tell them that as long as they focus on pulling that GPA up, they have all the necessary tools and people to help them succeed and to use them wisely.” “Reflect on yourself and be truthful about the decisions you made previously that brought you into this situation. Stay positive through the process because its not the end of the world. Its just a wake up call.” “You pay a lot of money to go here. There is A LOT of free help. Use it.”
We also asked 49er Rebound students to describe in their own words what it means to be on Academic Probation.

“A chance to better yourself.” “I kind of feel like I almost fell off a cliff and this is a rope to save me. I’m not over the true problem yet, but these are the steps to get better. It is really a wake up call from me coasting through school.” “Academic probation is faculty and staff taking extra time to make sure we succeed.” “You’re slipping, here’s some antislip boots and another shot.” “It is a setback that will be overcome.” “Being on academic probation to me is a helpful and supportive wake up call. I’m thankful now that I have a list of people and resources in front of me that I believe will ultimately help me in my academic success.” “Feels like its a reminder to get back on track to grades I should be getting.” “It just means I need to work harder on my grades.” “I did not like it when I heard about my academic probation and I felt really bad but then I decided I can still do it. And I thought that I will do my best to bring back good grades.” “To me, this is a reminder that although I did not bake the grades that I needed for this semester, I have been given an opportunity to turn things around and develop better studying habits. Academic probation works as a motivator for students who are not rising to their potential.”
